In the past few days i experienced that my sound-system was somehow messed up after some time. And I’m pretty sure, that the firefox flash plugin has something to do with it. However the quick-and-dirty fix is to reload the sound system.
sudo alsa force-reload
This will reload all necessary sound-modules.
If you experience screen flickering at random times you can try adding
(for copy&paste check the “)
to /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-kernel-nkc (Ubuntu) in order to fix some timer problems between the driver and compiz-fusion.
It took me a long time to finally see this solution here:
There is a tiny kernel option, which has a big performance impact – especially when it’s configured wrong ^^.
Processor type and features
(It is NOT a good idea thinking “Oh, what’s good for a server is fine for my desktop!” )
If a compiz-fusion-plugin is complaining about sth. needed by `c-build-objs’ you can try build compiz-fusion from the git-source.
Due to ChaosRadio i’ve found a website where you can download lots of music for free and completely legal. The music there is under the creative commons licence.
If emerge complains about a missing libGL.so you can try selecting another opengl-interfaces via
eselect opengl
It will create the necessary links…
try changing the device section of your xorg.conf
Section "Device" Identifier "ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon 9200 SE (RV280)" Driver "fglrx" Option "VideoOverlay" "on" Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off" EndSection
to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
If you’re looking for the “Enable VM86 support” option in the 2.6 kernel (in order to prepare the kernel for the ati-drivers) you can try to enable Options -> Show All Options in your xconfig.
If you experience permission errors during the download of portage packages (and you’re not paranoid) you can try disabling userfetch in your make.conf.
FEATURES="-userfetch"
In newer versions it is enabled by default.
(This feature drops root privileges during the download process. In my opinion it increases the security of your system but it won’t change your life 😉 )
